Moscow tells officials to buy Russian Ladas, Chinese cars
  + stars: | 2023-10-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Alexey Malgavko//File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 20 (Reuters) - Russia's government on Friday published a list of domestically-produced cars that state officials should buy, all either Russian or Chinese brands, highlighting Beijing's infiltration of Russia's automobile industry since the Ukraine war. As the West shuns Russia, Russia has shunned Western corporations. The Russian cars listed were five Lada models, produced by Russia's largest carmaker Avtovaz, as well as the UAZ, Aurus and Moskvich brands, and Evolute electric cars. The Moskvich, a revived Soviet-era car, is emblematic of China's growing sway over Russia's car industry. Five models of Chinese carmaker Haval, which has been producing cars at its plant in the Tula region, 200 kilometres from Moscow, since 2019, were listed.

IMPORTED ASSEMBLY KITSAfter a chaotic decade following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia encouraged Western carmakers to build factories. "Undoubtedly, the expansion of Chinese carmakers on the Russian market will continue," said Andrey Olkhovsky, the head of dealership chain Avtodom. It is a radical change of fortunes for Chinese carmakers in Russia. Production of Chinese vehicles only began in Russia in 2019 with the arrival of Chinese automotive company Great Wall Motor (601633.SS). LESS LOCAL INPUTUnder the partnership with Chinese firms, less of the production at former Western factories is currently conducted in Russia, the sources said.

Stepan, 28, who has increasingly driven Chinese cars when using carsharing services, is among those that need convincing. If you want my honest opinion, the difference (with Chinese cars) is massive," he told Reuters at Moscow's Favorit Motors dealership. When buying his new Chinese car, Alexander, 74, looked for one which encompassed Swedish technology. While Chinese cars are increasingly filling the gap, the lack of reputation remains an issue, said auto industry expert Sergey Aslanyan. Chinese brands' market share reached 37.15% in January-February, up from 9.48% a year earlier, Autostat and PPK data showed.
That left used cars accounting for almost three quarters of all cars sold, up from 55% in 2021, the data shows. Russians turn to used cars as production falls, prices rise"Money flowed into the used cars market as prices for second-hand cars held up, while at the same time the structure of the new cars market changed significantly," Autostat CEO Sergei Udalov told Reuters. At 2.5 million roubles, his Skoda was around 1 million roubles more expensive than it would have been a year earlier, but still 1 million roubles cheaper than a brand new version. Imports of used cars jumped last year, with those from Japan leading the way. Japan has curbed exports of high-value cars to Russia, but used cars imported by individuals fall outside the restrictions.
Soviet-era bike revived by Russian factory as Moscow shuns West

"Not everyone had one, but it was everyone's dream to have one," Forward's commercial director Alexei Boyaryshnikov told Reuters. At 98 roubles - around half the average Soviet monthly wage in 1980 - it was not the most affordable bike on the market but was highly sought after. "Although two generations have probably passed since people first rode the bike ... our bicycle factory decided to start producing the Kama again because we're in Perm and it is the ancestor of the (previous) large bike factory." Dozens of Western products have been replaced with domestic equivalents, as Russian entrepreneurs aim to capitalise on the departure of brands such as Coca-Cola and McDonald's. Reuters GraphicsRussia's new passenger car and LCV sales were 46,403 in November, the Association of European Businesses (AEB) said on Tuesday, and sales should reach around 600,000 for this year overall. "There is little production of Western car brands and few imports, so the market is divided between the Russian and Chinese car industries," Russian automotive analyst Vladimir Bespalov told Reuters. Russian cars satisfy demand at lower prices - up to about 1.5 million roubles ($23,961), and Chinese are also taking over the Western niche of prices above 2.5 million roubles. In one high-profile case, a Chinese car is masquerading as Russian one. In monetary terms, the share could surpass 40% of what he expects will be a 1.5-trillion-rouble market in 2023.
It sold its plant, now renamed the Moscow Automobile Factory Moskvich, for another rouble. [1/6] A view shows a car under the Soviet-era brand Moskvich during a ceremony marking the launch of the production at the Moscow Automobile Factory Moskvich in Moscow, Russia, November 23, 2022. The government's ultimate target of producing 100,000 Moskvich vehicles a year, some of which will be electric, is far below the industry average for a car plant of 200,000-300,000. "The first Moskvich cars will come off the production line in December 2022," Kamaz (KMAZ.MM) said in a statement. The car goes on sale in Russia next month, it added, although the price has yet to be disclosed.

Sources have told Reuters that Chinese carmaker JAC's design, engineering and production platform will be used to produce the brand. The ministry said the launch of full-scale production would provide jobs for around 40,000 more people.

REUTERS/Anton VaganovMOSCOW, Nov 16 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin urged the Russian government on Wednesday to control car prices, as one industry head said Western sanctions could send annual sales crashing to below 1 million for the first time since records began. Manturov also proposed extending preferential car financing to military personnel, adding: "Today we can speak of an emerging trend towards a recovery of the industry." He said the number of cars sold in Russia would this year fall below 1 million, a first in modern history.
